Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio 2 with Omarchy
Sixteen exact-model reports show that this Surface can become a capable Linux machine, but input, audio, power and desktop behavior still depend on the kernel and configuration.
Bottom line
The Surface Laptop Studio 2 can run a usable Linux desktop with working touch, pen, cameras, wireless and NVIDIA graphics. It is not a low-friction Omarchy machine. The only exact Omarchy report reached a three-display desktop but had recurring focus jumps, while other exact-model owners report internal-microphone routing trouble, short desktop freezes and touchpad behavior that changes with the kernel. The old incomplete-shutdown problem has a model-specific linux-surface fix, shipped in its Arch package since 6.18.3-2 and confirmed by two owners. Most of the strongest positive results still use linux-surface rather than a stock kernel.
Should you use or buy it?
Existing owners who are comfortable carrying a USB keyboard, installing linux-surface and keeping a known-good kernel have credible paths forward. Before relying on the machine, test the touchpad in each screen position, microphone input, hibernation and any NVIDIA workload you need. If you use a stock or pre-6.18.3-2 linux-surface kernel, test shutdown too. Shoppers should choose it only if the folding display and pen support justify more maintenance than a conventional laptop; Linux buyers looking for predictable input and power behavior have safer choices.

Detailed findings
Install and boot
An early Pop!_OS linux-surface installation had no working keyboard or touchpad, and an Arch installation environment later lacked built-in keyboard input. The Arch owner continued with a USB keyboard and recovered the internal keyboard after installing linux-surface. Newer Ubuntu owners completed working linux-surface and stock-kernel installations, though the stock-kernel touchpad required additional work.
In practice Keep a USB keyboard and mouse available. A successful installation does not establish that Surface input will work in the installer or on the stock kernel.

Desktop and graphics
Omarchy 4.0.1 ran on Intel and NVIDIA graphics with three displays, but pointer movement repeatedly returned focus to one window. A separate Ubuntu linux-surface owner reported intermittent one- to two-second freezes that paused input and replayed buffered keystrokes. Other owners described usable KDE and Ubuntu desktops.
In practice Basic desktop operation and both graphics devices have positive evidence, but the two current interaction failures make a clean daily-use verdict premature.

Display and brightness
The internal 2400-by-1600 panel was active at 1.6 scaling in the Omarchy three-display session. An Ubuntu owner also used the panel but found automatic brightness erratic and disabled the ambient-light setting.
In practice The panel works; automatic brightness may not. Manual brightness-key behavior is still unreported.

Keyboard, hotkeys and backlight
The internal keyboard was unavailable in one early Pop!_OS linux-surface report and in the Arch installer. It worked after the Arch owner installed linux-surface, and a later Arch owner described the KDE system as broadly usable. Hotkeys and keyboard backlighting remain unreported.
In practice The evidence separates installer and early-kernel failures from the installed linux-surface result; it does not show a permanently unusable keyboard.
Omarchy 4.0.2 Omarchy contains generic Surface keyboard module handling, while warning that models other than the Surface Laptop 3 may require additional modules. Project source

Touchpad, touch and pen
Reports progressed from a dead keyboard and touchpad in 2023 to working touch, pen and haptic touchpad on current linux-surface builds. The path was uneven: an Arch setup guide disappeared, Arch kernels later left the touchpad dead, and one owner found it failed when the screen was angled. A Fedora owner reported full touchpad gestures on linux-surface 6.18.4, while a stock Ubuntu owner needed the linux-surface HID quirk plus custom iptsd service handling.
In practice linux-surface is the clearest current route. On a stock kernel, expect a model-specific backport and more service configuration; test laptop, stage and tablet positions separately.

Fingerprint and biometrics
An Ubuntu owner captured frames from both the RGB and infrared cameras. No retained Linux report tests facial login, so the infrared result is camera evidence rather than a biometric-authentication result.
In practice Do not assume Windows Hello-style face login works merely because the infrared camera produces frames.

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
The Intel AX210 Wi-Fi and Bluetooth devices worked out of the box for one exact-model Ubuntu owner using linux-surface.
In practice This is one direct current result, not a broad test across access points, Bluetooth peripherals or suspend cycles.
Sources Surface Laptop Studio 2 Ubuntu component and NVIDIA report
Speakers, microphone and audio
An Arch owner reported working sound, but a current Fedora linux-surface report found the internal Realtek ALC274 microphone unavailable to applications. Forcing the stream exposed distorted audio; removing boost and muting one channel produced clear audio, but the owner still lacked a proper UCM profile or machine driver.
In practice Speaker output has a positive report. Treat the internal microphone as unresolved for calls and recording until a model-specific audio configuration lands.

Camera
An Ubuntu linux-surface owner captured frames from both the front RGB camera and the infrared camera through standard UVC support.
In practice This establishes image capture, not video-call quality, effects, automatic framing or facial login.

Suspend and resume
The linux-surface feature matrix lists suspend as supported for this model. One exact-model Arch test of proposed ITHC changes also completed several suspend and resume cycles without losing touch, pen or touchpad input.
In practice The positive test covers input recovery across several cycles. It does not establish Omarchy battery drain during sleep, hibernation or S0ix residency.

External displays and docks
Two external 1920-by-1080 displays were active alongside the internal display. The connection path and dock behavior were not described.
Battery, power and thermals
Four owners reported or confirmed incomplete shutdown across Debian, Fedora, Ubuntu, Arch and a Pop!_OS live environment in 2024. linux-surface added the model to its PCI shutdown quirk in January 2026; the author tested it on an exact machine, a second owner confirmed that hard power-offs were no longer needed, and the fix shipped in the Arch 6.18.3-2 package. That second owner later said hibernation usually resumed but had at least one failed wake and one check where the fan kept spinning. Separately, an Ubuntu RTX 4060 owner recovered a 10-watt GPU power cap by disabling runtime D3, leaving the discrete GPU powered at a battery cost.
In practice The old shutdown warning is historical on current linux-surface, not a present failure. Hibernation remains less certain, and the NVIDIA performance fix trades idle battery life for GPU power. No retained report establishes current Omarchy battery life.

Daily use
The folding screen is the reason to accept the extra work
4.37 pounds with laptop, stage and tablet positions
The secondary hinge supports a normal laptop position, a forward stage position and a nearly flat drawing position. Reviewers found the 2-kilogram chassis bulky as a tablet, while the optional Slim Pen 2 stores and charges under the front edge. Linux owners should test touch and touchpad behavior in every position because one report found the touchpad failed with the screen angled.

Lowering the refresh rate adds about an hour in the measured browser test
8 hours, 18 minutes at 120 Hz; 9 hours, 35 minutes at 60 Hz
Notebookcheck measured those Wi-Fi runtimes at 150 nits on its Windows RTX 4060 unit; video playback reached 11 hours, 15 minutes at 120 Hz and 11 hours, 45 minutes at 60 Hz. Tom's Hardware measured 9 hours, 31 minutes in a separate mixed Windows battery test. No retained report measures Omarchy or Linux runtime, and the Linux NVIDIA power workaround keeps the discrete GPU awake.

Sustained load reaches the palm rest
About 40 C at the palm rest and 51.8 dBA at maximum load in one review
Notebookcheck found the machine quiet in light work but measured louder fans, warm metal where the hands rest and side exhaust near an external mouse under sustained CPU and GPU load. Those are Windows stress-test measurements for the RTX 4060 configuration, not Omarchy thermals.
Repairable parts do not make this an easy-upgrade laptop
The SSD and many assemblies are replaceable; memory is soldered
Microsoft lists the display, removable SSD, keyboard, ports, battery and enclosure, motherboard and other parts for self-repair, but says the work is for technically skilled people with the correct tools. The glued feet and hidden screws make routine access difficult, and the memory cannot be upgraded.

Performance
NVIDIA compute and graphics on Linux
The RTX 4060 reached nvidia-smi, OpenCL and a 60-watt power limit after two manual fixes
An Ubuntu linux-surface owner had to override an objtool warning that stopped NVIDIA's DKMS build, enroll the signing key for Secure Boot and disable runtime D3 to recover the GPU from a 10-watt cap. The final 60-watt state is below the hardware's 80-watt maximum and keeps the GPU powered, reducing battery efficiency.

CPU work and video encoding
Geekbench 5: 1,851 single-core and 12,779 multi-core; 4K-to-1080p HandBrake: 5 minutes, 11 seconds
Tom's Hardware measured those results on a Windows 11 unit with the Core i7-13700H, RTX 4060 and 64 GB of memory. A 20-run Cinebench R23 loop stayed mostly in the low 11,000s. These results describe the laptop's hardware capacity, not Omarchy performance.
Gaming and sustained GPU work
Modern games were playable at high 1080p settings, but the 80-watt RTX 4060 did not sustain its peak
Notebookcheck saw GPU power fall from 80 to 68 watts within minutes and recorded a 72.9% Time Spy stress-test result. On battery, the GPU was limited to 40 watts and lost about 20% of its performance. These are Windows measurements; Linux adds the separate driver and power-state work described above.
Sources Surface Laptop Studio 2 RTX 4060 measured review, Surface Laptop Studio 2 Ubuntu component and NVIDIA report
Storage-heavy work
Up to 7 GB/s sequential throughput with stable sustained results in one measured review
Notebookcheck measured the 1 TB Kioxia PCIe 4.0 SSD at up to 7 GB/s without sustained throttling. Tom's Hardware measured 1,877.46 MB/s in its 25 GB file-copy test. Factory SSDs are removable, but opening the chassis is skilled repair work rather than a quick upgrade.
