Omarchy Hardware

ASUS Zenbook S 14 UX5406SA with Omarchy

Twenty-six exact-model owners show a mature Linux path for this Lunar Lake ultraportable, but no retained report directly tests Omarchy and recent audio, display-resume and keyboard-light regressions still matter.

Compiled from 26 exact-model owner accounts: 12 on Reddit, one on Oursi, nine on GitHub and four on Linux forums. Also checked against the exact-model Linux project, current Omarchy search, ASUS firmware, upstream audio and measured-review records. Report mix: two Arch Linux · five Arch-based · 19 other Linux Updated

UX5406SA is the 2024 Lunar Lake model. Do not transfer these findings to the newer Panther Lake UX5406AA, the Vivobook S5406SA or an ambiguous listing that says only UX5406S.

Bottom line

There is no retained exact-model Omarchy owner report for the UX5406SA. Current Arch and other Linux evidence nevertheless shows a working install, accelerated desktop, OLED panel, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB camera, touchpad and external-display path. The largest remaining risks are update-sensitive SoundWire audio, inconsistent suspend and panel recovery, a BIOS-dependent keyboard-backlight failure and an ambient-light sensor that needs model-specific firmware. This is credible transferable evidence, not proof that Omarchy 4.0.2 reproduces every result.

Should you use or buy it?

An existing owner has a strong route on a current kernel and firmware stack, but should remove obsolete early-audio overrides before upgrading and test the microphone, headphone jack, keyboard light, overnight suspend and panel recovery. A shopper should verify the full UX5406SA suffix, memory capacity and touch configuration. The 32 GB ceiling is permanent; the SSD is the practical internal upgrade. Until a direct Omarchy owner reports, budget time for Arch-level diagnosis rather than assuming a clean install from the broader Linux record.

Detailed findings

Install and boot

Working reports

Arch, Fedora, Ubuntu, Manjaro, CachyOS and EndeavourOS owners all reached installed desktops. Early live images could lack Wi-Fi, graphics or touchpad support, while a later Arch owner temporarily disabled Secure Boot for installation and re-enabled it after setup.

In practice The hardware has a demonstrated current Linux install path, but none of these installations used Omarchy. A current ISO and network fallback still matter on this rapidly enabled platform.

Desktop and graphics

Mixed results

Current owners report a responsive accelerated desktop after the Lunar Lake C-state fix reached Linux 6.12.5 and 6.13-rc2. Early kernels produced frequent microfreezes, and the exact-model project still warns about Vulkan rendering faults and log noise.

In practice Ordinary desktop acceleration is well supported. Vulkan-heavy applications and games remain a separate test, and the old intel_idle.max_cstate=1 workaround carries a battery cost.

Linux 6.12.5 The Lunar Lake C-state fix removed the recurring early responsiveness failure for later owner reports. Project source

Internal display and brightness

Mixed results

Many owners use the 2880-by-1800 OLED at 120 Hz, and one enabled variable refresh. A current CachyOS owner found Linux 7.1.4 could leave the internal eDP panel absent even through the next firmware screen; Linux 6.18 LTS resumed five times but logged link, AUX and brightness errors with delays up to about 17 seconds.

In practice Normal panel operation has broad support, but the recent single-owner regression is severe enough to test repeated reboot and suspend cycles before relying on the machine.

Keyboard, hotkeys and backlight

Mixed results

Typing and ordinary function keys work. The Copilot key was incomplete in one Manjaro report, and an exact BIOS 308 machine exposed no keyboard-backlight device because firmware omitted the expected presence flag even though direct ACPI control lit the LEDs.

In practice The keyboard is usable, but backlighting can vary by firmware or unit state. The proposed DMI quirk is not a released fix in the retained record.

Touchpad and pointing

Working reports

Ordinary pointer, tap and click behavior works across many owner reports. Fedora briefly lost the touchpad in 6.12 release-candidate kernels because of a distro kernel configuration and restored it in the next build. Gesture reports still differ, and ASUS edge gestures are not the same as desktop multitouch gestures.

In practice Basic pointing has a strong path. Test GNOME or KDE multitouch on the intended stack, and do not assume the Windows edge controls for volume, brightness and scrubbing exist.

Fingerprint and biometrics

Evidence, no verdict

ASUS specifies an IR-capable camera but no fingerprint reader. One owner found Howdy unreliable; ordinary UVC camera success does not establish IR face authentication.

In practice There is no fingerprint device to enable on retained configurations, and the evidence is too thin to promise Linux face login.

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth

Working reports

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth work in later Fedora, Ubuntu, Arch, Manjaro and CachyOS reports. Early images lacked one or both, and one Linux 6.15-rc1 plus linux-firmware 20250408 combination hung while starting iwlwifi until Wi-Fi was blacklisted.

In practice A current kernel and linux-firmware provide the established path. The isolated development-kernel regression shows why firmware and kernel should be changed together, with a rollback available.

Speakers, microphone and audio

Mixed results

Current packages can drive the speakers, digital microphone and headset, but the path has been unusually update-sensitive. Exact owners traced a dead microphone to kernel topology support, dummy output to a missing UCM model matcher, speaker regressions to stale manual overrides and headphone failures to particular 6.17 builds. Several still describe speaker quality below Windows.

In practice Test speakers, microphone and 3.5 mm output independently after every kernel, SOF, UCM or linux-firmware change. Remove obsolete manual topology and module overrides once upstream support is present.

July 2026 amplifier firmware Cirrus supplied updated firmware for all four exact-model CS35L56 amplifiers, but no retained owner yet confirms that it resolves the quality complaint. Project source

Camera

Working reports

Fedora, Ubuntu and kernel 6.14 owners explicitly report ordinary camera output working through the conventional USB/UVC device. One owner found that an ACPI electronic-shutter command used on an older Zenbook did not work on this model.

In practice This is a lower-risk camera path than Intel MIPI models, but video output does not establish IR login or electronic privacy-shutter control.

Sources UX5406SA Fedora, Ubuntu, Mint and Gentoo owner reports, UX5406SA electronic camera-shutter report, ASUS Zenbook S 14 UX5406 specifications

Suspend and resume

Mixed results

One Ubuntu owner measured roughly 2%–3% overnight loss, but twice found the laptop powered off after suspend until disabling ASUS Optimizations in firmware. Another could not resume from forced deep sleep, an early Fedora owner saw 10–15 seconds of post-wake sluggishness, and the recent CachyOS report found unreliable eDP recovery.

In practice Low sleep drain is possible, but battery remaining and full device recovery are separate checks. Use s2idle, then test repeated overnight closes, not only a short lid cycle.

Sources UX5406SA Fedora, Ubuntu, Mint and Gentoo owner reports, UX5406SA CachyOS and Manjaro owner reports, UX5406SA CachyOS eDP and resume regression

External displays and docks

Working reports

One Fedora owner drove two 2560-by-1440 displays at 240 Hz through a Thunderbolt dock while retaining the internal panel. Ubuntu owners also report mixed-resolution external displays working. A DisplayLink D6000 failure under Wayland is not evidence against the laptop's native Thunderbolt or HDMI paths.

In practice Native external-display support has useful positive evidence, but only a few dock and monitor combinations. Separate native DisplayPort or HDMI from DisplayLink before diagnosing a failure.

Sources UX5406SA Fedora, Ubuntu, Mint and Gentoo owner reports, UX5406SA CachyOS and Manjaro owner reports, ASUS Zenbook S 14 UX5406 specifications

Battery, power and thermals

Mixed results

Owners report roughly 3.6 watts in light use, around 8 watts for streamed video and about 10 hours of real Linux use; the measured Windows review reached 14.5 hours at 60 Hz and 12 hours 9 minutes at 120 Hz. One openSUSE owner still reports intermittent 400 MHz throttling, and the old C-state workaround sharply increases idle and sleep drain.

In practice The platform has strong battery potential, but power profile, panel refresh, kernel and workarounds materially change it. Windows measurements show hardware capacity, not expected Omarchy runtime.

Daily use

The screen is a strength with two Linux caveats

Fast OLED; PWM and recent resume risk

The exact review unit's 2880-by-1800 OLED runs at 120 Hz with very fast response and broad color coverage, but uses 480 Hz PWM at every brightness level. Linux owners broadly report 120 Hz working; the July 2026 eDP recovery failure remains a serious single-owner warning.

Some ASUS conveniences do not arrive with core support

Ordinary use first; OEM extras vary

The camera and touchpad can work while IR login, electronic shutter control, Windows-style touchpad edge gestures and automatic ambient light remain absent or need extra setup. The model-specific ISH firmware has one verified sensor success, but is not an out-of-box result.

Performance

Writing, browsing and mobile development

Strong fit when the current stack is stable

Owners report responsive Fedora, Ubuntu and Arch-based desktops, quiet light use and about 10 hours in realistic Linux use. The measured review found strong single-core performance but a roughly 30% multicore drop during sustained load as package power settled from 37 to 17 watts.

Sources UX5406SA Fedora, Ubuntu, Mint and Gentoo owner reports, UX5406SA CachyOS and Manjaro owner reports, UX5406SA Arch installation and daily-use report, Zenbook S 14 UX5406SA measured review

Long compiles and CPU-heavy local work

Efficient, not a multicore workstation

The eight-core, eight-thread Lunar Lake design favors efficiency and single-thread response over the multicore throughput of H-series or many AMD peers. Check for the reported 400 MHz state before blaming a workload, and expect sustained performance below the initial boost.

Sources UX5406SA component issue reports, Zenbook S 14 UX5406SA measured review

Integrated-graphics games and creative apps

Capable hardware with Linux application caveats

The measured Arc 140V unit scored 3,669 in Time Spy standard mode and ran Cyberpunk 2077 around 40 fps at 1080p medium. Those are Windows capacity results. Exact Linux owners report both successful games and title-specific frame drops, while the model project warns of Vulkan faults.
