Bottom line

A stock-UEFI T480 has two direct positive Omarchy reports: one fresh installation worked out of the box and another owner used the machine for travel and coding without issues. Earlier releases also produced specific, recoverable failures. Five T480 owners hit a TPM-related boot stall on Omarchy 3.3.x; two of them confirmed recovery by masking TPM services or disabling TPM. Another owner restored screen recording on 3.1.0 by installing the missing Intel video driver. Omarchy's built-in power panel still mishandles the two Power Bridge batteries, but one T480 owner confirmed that a current plugin restores per-pack visibility. The fingerprint reader usually needs a third-party driver and remains inconsistent. Arch and other Linux reports add caution around old batteries, firmware updates and the limits of Intel UHD 620 graphics; they are transferable risk signals, not Omarchy results.

For an existing T480 or a very inexpensive used one, the best-supported role is coding, terminal work and ordinary browsing on the integrated-graphics configuration. Prefer stock UEFI, a backlit keyboard, 16 GB or more of memory, an FHD panel and batteries whose health you can verify. Before installing, use current media and disable TPM as well as Secure Boot where the firmware allows it. One exact-model owner could not disable a TPM stuck in MFG Mode and instead restored boot by masking the two failing systemd TPM services from a Limine recovery snapshot. The owner-confirmed batteries plugin is a practical option while the built-in Power Bridge fixes remain open. Do not buy it for modern gaming, color-sensitive display work, effortless high-resolution external displays or a fingerprint reader you must be able to trust. Check the Thunderbolt and system firmware before depending on a dock. The retained update failure predates fwupd 2.0.12's fix, but one Arch owner separately attributed a removable-battery failure to a BIOS update, so keep a recovery path.

What is reported

12 findings with cited evidence
  • Install and boot

One stock-firmware owner reported that a fresh Omarchy install worked out of the box, and another reported no Omarchy issues in travel use. On Omarchy 3.3.x, five exact-model owners reported a post-update or first-boot stall tied to TPM initialization. One recovered by masking the failing services and another by disabling TPM; two supplied no final retest, while one identified disabling TPM as the applicable documented route without explicitly reporting a successful reboot. A Libreboot machine could not boot after the standard install, but the same owner later reached a working desktop with a custom ISO and GRUB path.

The stock-UEFI path is viable, but the release-specific failures make current media and a recovery drive prudent. Disable TPM where the firmware allows it; the retained service-mask recovery matters for machines whose TPM is stuck in MFG Mode. The reports do not establish that current Omarchy retains the 3.3.x failure. The Libreboot workaround is an abandoned owner-developed fork without snapshot support; its upstream change was rejected, and the official manual path produced an incomplete desktop for that owner.

  • Desktop and graphics

A fresh Omarchy installation ran smoothly during development, and an Arch owner described Linux compatibility as trouble-free on the Intel UHD 620 configuration.

These reports establish a usable desktop on integrated graphics. They do not remove the hardware's performance limits: the UHD 620 lacks AV1 hardware decoding and slowed down for one owner on a high-resolution external display.

  • Internal display and brightness

An Arch owner used the 1920-by-1080 panel without a Linux compatibility problem. A Linux Mint owner later found that kernel 7.0.0-28 resumed to a black LG internal panel while an external display continued working; kernel 6.17 did not reproduce the failure, and an i915 DPCD-backlight parameter restored the panel on that machine.

The internal display normally works, but panel quality varies and resume behavior can depend on the panel and kernel. Use the reported kernel parameter only if the symptom and hardware match.

  • Keyboard and backlight

An Omarchy owner called coding on the stock keyboard flawless. An Arch owner reported a working backlit keyboard with off, low and high settings.

The keyboard is one of the clearest daily-use strengths in the retained reports. Other function keys are not individually established.

  • Touchpad and TrackPoint

The current ArchWiki says the stock touchpad and TrackPoint work out of the box. One exact T480 owner reported touchpad shaking and eventual input loss after a battery ran down, while another owner reported no similar problem on two T480s.

Stock pointing support is well documented, but a used unit with intermittent input should be checked at low charge and during the Power Bridge handoff. The ArchWiki's higher-report-rate setting applies to the stock Synaptics touchpad, not the common glass-touchpad modification.

  • Fingerprint reader

Three retained failure reports found that Omarchy's default fingerprint setup could not find or enroll the Synaptics reader. Two other owners got it working with python-validity; one called recognition hit or miss, while a later guide added a resume-aware service restart and lock-screen relaunch.

A working path exists, but it replaces the stock fprintd package and adds owner-maintained services and PAM configuration. Treat the reader as optional convenience, not dependable authentication.

  • Wi-Fi and Bluetooth

The current ArchWiki lists the standard Intel 8265 Wi-Fi and Bluetooth devices as working. The retained Omarchy reports do not identify a wireless failure.

Standard Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are lower-risk components. Optional mobile broadband is separate: the ArchWiki marks one Realtek device working and the Fibocom L850-GL unsupported.

  • Speakers, microphone and audio

One Arch owner reported working internal speakers and a clean 3.5 mm output without noise or other faults.

The speakers worked but were described as quiet and weak for media. No retained report establishes the microphone or Omarchy-specific audio behavior.

  • Camera

The current ArchWiki lists the T480's 0c45:6366 webcam as working. Lenovo sold both a standard 720p camera and a 720p-plus-infrared configuration.

Basic webcam support has a current Arch baseline, but no retained Omarchy owner has reported a video-call result or infrared-camera login.

  • External displays and docks

One Arch owner drove a high-resolution external display but found desktop and web animations sluggish. A Fedora owner could not update the Thunderbolt controller from firmware 20 to 23 because fwupd lacked the expected device version format; fwupd 2.0.12 subsequently shipped a fix for that class of Thunderbolt update.

An external display can work, but the integrated GPU's age is visible at higher resolutions. Use fwupd 2.0.12 or later for Thunderbolt maintenance and verify the dock, output and refresh rate you plan to use. The project fix has no retained exact-T480 owner retest.

  • Suspend and resume

One Arch owner found that suspend and console resume worked while the Xorg session returned frozen. Another restored suspend and hibernation after changing an encrypted Btrfs installation from GRUB with LUKS1 to systemd-boot with LUKS2. A recent Linux Mint kernel regression left one LG internal panel black after resume until the owner applied an i915 backlight parameter.

The hardware can suspend and resume, but the retained evidence does not establish an Omarchy result. Test lid close, repeated wake, the internal panel, input and both batteries before relying on it away from power.

  • Batteries and thermals

Large removable batteries delivered long runtime in owner and measured-review evidence, but four Omarchy reports found incorrect per-pack status. A fifth T480 owner confirmed that the Omarchy batteries plugin restored separate pack readings. A Gentoo owner reported a hard shutdown during a low-charge battery switch, one Arch owner attributed permanent BAT1 charging failure to BIOS 1.56, and the current ArchWiki retains a Linux thermal-throttling warning.

Battery capacity is a strength only when both packs are healthy and the switching path is reliable. The plugin is an owner-confirmed workaround for visibility, not a fix for worn packs, unsafe handoff or firmware damage. Diagnose sustained-load throttling with measurements before applying privileged power-control tools.

Changes over time

19 dated events
  1. Arch owner isolates a frozen Xorg resume

Suspend and console resume worked on the hybrid-graphics T480, but the Xorg session returned with the display and input frozen.

  2. Boot and encryption changes restore suspend and hibernation

After intermittent failures on an encrypted Btrfs installation, one Arch owner reported stable suspend and hibernation after moving from GRUB with LUKS1 to systemd-boot with LUKS2.

  3. Battery handoff shutdown reported on Gentoo

A T480 with two old packs shut down under load near the switch threshold instead of moving cleanly to the second battery.

  4. Low-battery touchpad failure is not reproduced

One Arch owner tied touchpad shaking and input loss to a depleted battery; another owner reported no similar problem across two T480s.

  5. fwupd ships the Thunderbolt version-format fix

Fwupd 2.0.12 added a fix for Thunderbolt host controllers using affected version formats. This project change has no retained exact-T480 owner retest.

  6. Omarchy fingerprint enrollment failure reported

The first retained T480 fingerprint report found that Omarchy's setup command did not list the reader.

  7. Omarchy Power Bridge display problem emerges

The first of four retained Omarchy reports found incorrect or duplicated per-pack battery presentation even though both batteries were visible to the system.

  8. Stock T480 install works out of the box

An i5-8350U owner reported a fresh Omarchy install with smooth development use and no setup hiccups.

  9. python-validity fingerprint path confirmed

A T480 owner replaced the conflicting stock fingerprint package and enrolled the reader, while a later follow-up described recognition as hit or miss.

  10. Intel VA-API package restores screen recording

A T480 owner on Omarchy 3.1.0 confirmed that installing intel-media-driver fixed a screen recorder that reported success without producing a file.

  11. Omarchy 3.3.x TPM boot failure appears on T480

Five named T480 owners reported a post-update or first-boot stall across Omarchy 3.3.0, 3.3.2 and 3.3.3. Two owner accounts confirmed recovery; the remaining reports preserve the symptom and release boundary without implying a result.

  12. Two T480 owners recover by bypassing TPM services

One owner booted after masking the failing systemd TPM services, and another later confirmed that disabling TPM restored normal boot. Omarchy's current general installation guide still tells readers to disable Secure Boot and/or TPM.

  13. Libreboot installation completes but will not boot

The installed path expected UEFI services that the reported Libreboot configuration did not provide.

  14. Owner-developed Libreboot path reaches the desktop

The same T480 owner booted a custom ISO and GRUB path with LUKS and later survived an update, but snapshots were unavailable, the official manual installation remained incomplete and the proposed upstream change was closed unmerged. The owner reported in July that the project was abandoned.

  15. BAT1 charging failure attributed to BIOS 1.56

One Arch owner reported that two known-good external batteries stopped authenticating after the update and that downgrading did not restore charging.

  16. Fingerprint workaround extended across resume

A later T480 guide restarted python-validity when the USB sensor returned and relaunched hyprlock after resume; this remains an owner-maintained setup rather than an Omarchy default.

  17. Travel and coding use reported without Omarchy issues

An upgraded T480 owner reported no Omarchy problems and called coding on the stock keyboard flawless.

  18. Kernel update leaves one internal panel black after resume

A Linux Mint owner found that kernel 7.0.0-28 resumed with an external display but not the installed LG panel; kernel 6.17 worked, and an i915 DPCD-backlight parameter restored the internal display.

  19. T480 owner confirms the per-battery plugin

An exact-model owner installed the Omarchy batteries plugin and confirmed that its separate pack display fixed the built-in presentation problem.
